Arafah Day, which falls on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah, is a significant day in the Islamic calendar, particularly for those performing Hajj.
It is a day of profound spirituality and devotion. Hence, as Arafah day holds today, Osun Defender has exclusively gathered ten things Muslims should do and avoid on Arafah Day:
Things Muslims Should Do on Arafah Day
1. Fasting
For those not performing Hajj, fasting on Arafah Day is highly recommended. It is said to expiate the sins of the previous year and the coming year.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Fasting on the day of Arafah is an expiation for two years, the year preceding it and the year following it” (Sahih Muslim).
2. Engage in Dhikr and Dua
Arafah Day is a time to engage in constant remembrance of Allah (Dhikr) and make heartfelt supplications (Dua).
The Prophet (PBUH) said, “The best of supplications is the supplication on the day of Arafah” (Muwatta Malik).
3. Recite Talbiyah
Pilgrims should continuously recite the Talbiyah (“Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk…”) as it is a declaration of their readiness and eagerness to serve Allah.
4. Seek Forgiveness
It is a day to seek Allah’s forgiveness earnestly. Pilgrims and non-pilgrims alike should spend the day in repentance and seeking forgiveness for past sins.
5. Perform Salah on Time
Observing the five daily prayers on time is especially emphasized. Pilgrims pray Dhuhr and Asr combined at Arafah, following the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH).
6. Listen to the Khutbah
Pilgrims in Arafat should listen to the Khutbah (sermon) delivered from the Namirah Mosque, which provides guidance and reflection on the significance of the day.
7. Show Humility and Piety
Demonstrating humility and piety is crucial. Pilgrims should wear simple, unsewn clothing (Ihram) to symbolize equality and modesty before Allah.
8. Make a Lot of Dua
Continuous supplication, particularly between Dhuhr and Maghrib, is recommended as it is the most virtuous time for dua on Arafah Day.
9. Help Fellow Pilgrims
Assisting and showing kindness to fellow pilgrims is encouraged, fostering a spirit of brotherhood and cooperation.
10. Reflect on the Significance of Arafah
Spend time reflecting on the significance of the day and the immense mercy and forgiveness that Allah bestows upon His servants.

Things Muslims Should Avoid on Arafah Day
1. Engaging in Sinful Behaviour
Engaging in sinful acts such as lying, cheating, and backbiting is strictly forbidden, as the day demands purity and sincerity.
2. Neglecting Prayers
Neglecting or delaying prayers is highly discouraged. Salah should be observed on time, with added devotion and concentration.
3. Distracting Activities
Engaging in activities that distract from worship, such as unnecessary conversations, idle talk, or entertainment, should be avoided.
4. Arguing or Quarrelling
Pilgrims should avoid arguments and quarrels. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Whoever performs Hajj to this House (Ka’bah) and does not engage in sexual relations, commit sin, or dispute unjustly during the Hajj, will come out as sinless as a newborn child” (Sahih Bukhari).
5. Neglecting the Sunnah
Ignoring the Sunnah acts of the Prophet (PBUH) during Hajj, such as combining Dhuhr and Asr prayers at Arafat, is discouraged.
6. Eating or Drinking in Excess
Overeating or drinking excessively can distract from worship and cause lethargy, which detracts from the spiritual experience.
7. Wasting Time
Spending time in idle activities instead of engaging in worship and reflection is to be avoided.
8. Disrespecting the Sacredness of the Place
Any form of disrespect towards the sacred sites or the sanctity of the day itself is forbidden.
9. Forgetting to Repent
Failing to seek forgiveness and repent for one’s sins is a missed opportunity for spiritual renewal and cleansing.
10. Ignoring Fellow Pilgrims’ Needs
Neglecting the needs and well-being of fellow pilgrims contradicts the spirit of brotherhood and community central to Hajj.
In summary, Arafah Day is a time for intense worship, reflection, and seeking Allah’s mercy. Muslims should focus on acts of devotion, avoid sinful behavior, and strive to make the most of this spiritually significant day.
