15 Killed In Suspected Armed Herders Attack

At least 15 people were reportedly killed during a renewed attack by gunmen suspected to be armed herders in Anyiin, located in the Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The assault occurred on Wednesday at approximately 6:32 PM, with the attackers invading the town and causing chaos.

Numerous individuals sustained various degrees of injuries, and several others are unaccounted for as of the latest updates.

Anyiin is known as the hometown of former state governor Gabriel Suswam.

Community leader Joseph Anawah reported that more than 20 heavily armed suspects carried out the three-hour attack.

He stated, “Fulani militia terrorists yesterday Wednesday, October 30, 2024, unleashed terror on Anyiin town Logo LGA of Benue State in an operation that started about 6:32 PM, leaving over 15 people dead and some with various degrees of injuries while others are missing.”

Among the victims were a retired Primary School Supervisor, Orihundu Ati, and the son of the Kindred Head of Mbawuave, Zaki Mbatern.

Anawah also identified other victims, including the son of a former Chief of Staff to the former Logo Local Government Area chairman, Tordoo Suswam, and the son of Mr. Uyange Chembe, the younger brother of the late District Head of Ukemberagya, Zaki John Chembe.

Anawah, who previously served as an aide to Suswam, noted that the large number of attackers overwhelmed local security forces.

He urged the state government to work with the federal government to enhance security measures in vulnerable areas, calling on the government to collaborate “to provide maximum security in the flashpoints.”

When contacted, the state police command spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, stated that she had not yet received a report on the incident.

However, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security and External Affairs, Col. Alex Igbaya (retd.), confirmed the attack but refrained from disclosing the casualty figures.

He said, “Security people already deployed to the area. Military men are there.”
