The Chairman, All Local Governments of Nigeria ALGON, State of Osun chapter, Hon Abiodun Idowu has held that the 1999 constitution does not recognise local government autonomy.
Idowu said calls to make the states empower the council areas would be more appropriate than the clamour for autonomy which has continued to generate reactions in public discourse.
He stated this while featuring on N.U.J OSBC CHAPEL programme, OJU~ABE.
The Ifedayo LG Chairman who noted that the local government plays vital roles in nation building maintained that if the 1999 constitution had granted autonomy to the third tier of government, massive development would have been witnessed in the country.
Idowu explained that councils in the State of Osun are now the toast of others in the country as a result of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s magnanimity.
According to him, “local government chairmen in the state have scored an excellent mark in the areas of roads grading, building of lock- up shops, ensuring adequate security in addition to youths, women and elders empowerment.
“Thirty-eight boreholes have been sunk in ifedayo Local Government Area, in addition to the distribution of ninety motorcycles as empowerment tools.”
Frowning at politicking without concrete job, the ALGON chairman explained that such decision may lead to mismanagement of public funds and embezzlement.
On why government properties no longer last as expected, Hon. Idowu blamed it on peoples attitudes and lack of maintenance culture calling on individuals to see government properties as theirs and protect them against vandals.
