The designer of Nigeria’s flag, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi (OFR), Pa. is dead.

Following his death on Tuesday, OSUN DEFENDER has revealed 20 facts you should know about him.

1. Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi was born on May 10, 1936, in Ibadan, Nigeria.

2. He died today, Tuesday, August 30th, 2023 at age 87.

3. He designed the Nigerian national flag at the age of 23, while he was a student in London.

4. The flag was designed in 1959 and was officially adopted on October 1, 1960, when Nigeria gained independence.

5. Akinkunmi’s design was chosen out of nearly 2,000 entries in a national competition to create the flag.

6. The flag consists of two green vertical bands on the sides and a white vertical band in the middle.
