Nigeria’s men Basketball national team, D’Tigers, will leave the shores of the country in batches for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
According to Afolabi Oni the Media Officer of the Nigerian BasketBall Federation (NBBF), six home-based players and their coaches will leave the country on the 23rd of March for Australia to be joined two days later by six foreign based players.
“The team has been handed over to the Sports Ministry and the first batch from Nigeria will leave the country next Friday and the players selected from abroad will join the team in Australia,” Oni told CSN.
Nigeria will take on New Zealand in their opening game at the Cairns Convention Centre on the 6th before facing Canada on the 7th at the same venue before playing host nation Australia in their final group game on the 10th of April.
According to the competition schedule, the top two teams in Group A will advance to the semifinals, while third and fourth place will play the top two teams in group B in the qualifying round. The bottom two teams in group B will be eliminated.
Meanwhile, Nigeria will compete in 11 sports namely, Athletics, Wrestling, Basketball, Gymnastics, Boxing, Table tennis, Weightlifting, Para Powerlifting, Para Table Tennis and Para Athletics.
The XXI Commonwealth Games will be held in the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia from the 4th to the 15th of April 2018.
