The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it would manage its presidential aspirants, emerge stronger and defeat President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 general elections.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said this on Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
He said contrary to people’s fears of the party having another crisis following the emergence of several aspirants, the development was healthy for democracy.
“As far as the Peoples Democratic Party is concerned, the development in our party in respect of the number of presidential aspirants is a healthy development.
“It is a process that we will manage, come out stronger and defeat President Muhammadu Buhari,” he said.
Ologbondiyan’s reaction follows the wave of mass defection of APC members to the party.
No fewer than 13 APC federal lawmakers including Senator Dino Melaye, Governors Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto and Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State and Senate President Bukola Saraki defected to the PDP.
Shortly after, Saraki, Tambuwal, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark and a few others threw in the hat for the presidential race.
The PDP’s spokesperson gave an assurance that the party would conduct free, fair and transparent primaries on October 6 that would produce its presidential candidate in next year’s polls.
He said, “What is important is the process that our party will put forward for the presidential primaries. And I can assure you and every Nigerian that the PDP is determined to provide a process that will be free, fair, clean and transparent.”
