2025 National Convention: PDP Postpones Screening Of Aspirants
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the postponement of the screening of aspirants vying for various national offices ahead of its 2025 Elective National Convention.
The exercise, initially scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025, has been delayed due to what the party described as “unforeseen circumstances.”
This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, who serves as Chairman of the PDP National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC).
Fintiri stated that a new date for the screening would be communicated in due course, adding that the party regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement.
“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement. All aspirants and members of our party should note the foregoing and be guided accordingly,” the statement read in part.
He assured members that the committee remains fully committed to ensuring a transparent, credible, and hitch-free national convention.
The PDP’s 2025 Elective National Convention is scheduled to take place between November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Earlier, the party had inaugurated a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee, chaired by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former Ondo State governorship candidate, Eyitayo Jegede.
The committee was tasked with vetting aspirants for various national offices ahead of the convention.
The postponement comes amid rising political interest within the party, following the recent declaration by former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, to contest for the position of National Chairman.
Lamido’s announcement contrasts with the earlier endorsement of former Minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as the consensus candidate of northern PDP stakeholders, a move that has reportedly been rejected by some factions, including supporters of Lamido and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, who argue that the endorsement lacked adequate consultation.
Despite the postponement, the party leadership has reiterated its readiness to conduct a credible and inclusive convention aimed at repositioning the PDP ahead of future elections.
