2027: Coalition Politics Unrealistic – Akpabio Warns Nigerians
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed the viability of coalition politics in Nigeria, warning citizens not to be misled by alliances forming ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the House of Representatives Open Week in Abuja, Akpabio insisted that only registered political parties, not coalitions or individuals, are legally permitted to contest elections in Nigeria.
“Nigerians, don’t be deceived. Coalition politics is unrealistic. The notion of a person aligning with two political parties at once is not only unconstitutional but misleading,” he stated.
His remarks come in response to the recent meeting of an opposition coalition on July 2, where the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was adopted as the official platform for the 2027 polls.
The coalition appointed former Senate President David Mark as interim national chairman and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as secretary.
The meeting drew notable political figures including Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Dino Melaye, Dele Momodu, Gabriel Suswam, Ireti Kingibe, Emeka Ihedioha, and Sadique Abubakar.
Akpabio also addressed what he called the misplaced expectations of lawmakers by the public.
He reminded citizens that the core mandate of the legislature is lawmaking, not constructing roads or executing capital projects.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, announced that the ongoing constitutional amendment will allocate 10 per cent of legislative seats to women and 5 per cent to persons with disabilities.
