Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that he will serve only one term if he secures the presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.

Amaechi, who recently dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined a coalition of opposition parties, made the statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday.

Speaking two days after attending the unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) interim executive in Abuja, Amaechi said his decision to run for a single term is tied to a commitment to power rotation and national stability.

“For now, the way Nigeria is, you must keep to that unwritten agreement that says south eight years, north eight years,” he said.

He recalled leading a revolt against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) when it allegedly broke a similar power-sharing understanding.

“I led a fight against the PDP government because there was an agreement that the government at that time would spend four years, but after four years, the government reneged,” he said.

“That will lead to instability at its peak, as the north will react. So, the best thing to do is to support a northern candidate to continue the balance of power.”

When asked if he would stick to a single term if given the ADC presidential ticket, Amaechi replied, “Of course. If I get the ticket, I will only do one term.”

He explained that if not for the terms of the coalition agreement, he would have been more direct about his 2027 ambition.

“If not for the coalition agreement, the answer to whether I’ll run would have been an outright yes,” he stated.

“But what did we agree? Everyone should keep aside their ambition. Let’s first get the platform. Let’s build it before talking about the presidency.”

Amaechi also painted a grim picture of the country’s economic condition, stating that Nigeria is in a state of destruction and in dire need of a complete overhaul.

He accused both the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of plotting to hijack the 2027 elections.

“Nigerians can hardly afford what they want to eat anymore,” he lamented, adding that inflation has reached a peak and the economy is choking the average citizen.
