2027: SDP Distances Self From Opposition Coalition, Vows To Battle APC Alone
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the South-West has distanced itself from the recent coalition of opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The clarification came during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Saturday at the party’s secretariat in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Chairman of Chairmen of the SDP across the 36 states and the FCT, Femi Olaniyi, popularly known as Ferrari, stated that the party would rather focus on building a winning strategy to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“We make them to understand that no part of SDP in the region that joins the coalition.
“Nobody can take any decision on this coalition except the directive from our NWC. So, we are still waiting for our NWC to come up with its own stand.
“In 2027, we will rescue Nigeria from the current administration, bring a formidable government and show all Nigerians a true and real democracy.”
The coalition, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform, had in attendance key opposition figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former governors Rauf Aregbesola and Nasir El-Rufai.
A serving lawmaker from Ekiti State, Babatunde Omotayo, also backed Olaniyi’s position.
“The most important among what we discussed was how we can remain one and speak with one voice to move the party forward in the region. So, SDP as a political party doesn’t have plan to join the so-called coalition.”
Those present at the meeting included Olaniyi, Oyo Chairman Okunlade Michael, Gbenga Akinbuli (Ondo), Yinka Ola-Williams (Ogun), Yinus Gbadamosi (Osun), Ayodele Bamikole (Ekiti), SDP Deputy National Woman Leader Bosede Mercy Ilesanmi, and others.
