2027: Tinubu Begin Moves To Carpet APC Stalwarts From Defecting To SDP – Sources
As the 2027 presidential election draws closer, emerging reports suggest that President Bola Tinubu is making frantic efforts to prevent the defection of key All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwarts especially those from the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
A leaked memo indicates that Tinubu is considering enlisting the help of former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, a trusted ally of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, to convince the CPC faction to remain within the APC fold.
In return, Al-Makura is reportedly being promised the APC National Chairmanship position.
Sources reveal that Al-Makura has scheduled a press briefing for Monday, where he is expected to announce Buhari’s alleged endorsement of efforts to keep his political loyalists in the APC.
This development underscores the deepening internal fractures within the ruling party.
Prominent political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and ex-Imo Governor Achike Udenwa are reportedly weighing alternative political platforms, citing growing discontent with Tinubu’s leadership.
Amid fears of a mass defection, the Progressive Governors’ Forum, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, has intensified efforts to woo Buhari back into active political engagement to forestall a crisis.
Uzodimma, alongside other APC governors, recently visited Buhari in Kaduna, urging him to intervene.
Adding to the tension, El-Rufai has openly stated that he received Buhari’s blessing to exit the APC.
Several of Buhari’s former ministers are also said to be on the verge of defecting to the SDP, while party members in Buhari’s home state of Katsina have already made the switch.
In a bid to contain the fallout, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and the National Working Committee (NWC) met with Buhari on Friday just hours after Buhari reportedly hosted opposition heavyweights like Atiku, El-Rufai, Tambuwal, and former Minister Isa Pantami.
The CPC bloc, which includes influential figures like former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, ex-Minister of Communications Isa Pantami, and former Education Minister Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has grown increasingly disenchanted with the Tinubu administration.
Their potential defection threatens to undermine the APC’s chances in 2027 and casts serious doubt on the party’s unity and electoral strength moving forward.
