2027: Why We Want Gov. Makinde To Run For President – Oyo LG Leaders
Local government officials across Oyo State have called on Governor Seyi Makinde to contest the 2027 presidential election, saying his leadership style, economic vision, and achievements in the state qualify him to transform Nigeria at the national level.
The call was made on Tuesday by hundreds of council secretaries, chiefs of staff to local government chairmen, supervisory councillors, and special assistants from all 33 local government areas of the state during a solidarity rally held at the Oyo State Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
The event, which drew a large crowd of enthusiastic supporters, was organised to persuade the governor to heed what they described as the “yearning of Nigerians for purposeful leadership.”
Speaking on behalf of the group, the Chairman of the Oyo State Supervisory Councillors’ Forum, Mr. Ayodeji Oladepo, said Governor Makinde had proven his capacity through what he called the “massive transformation” of Oyo State.
He added that the governor’s policies in infrastructure, education, and economic development had positively impacted millions of lives.
“If Governor Makinde could replicate the same vision and leadership at the national level, Nigeria will experience true renewal and economic recovery,” Oladepo stated.
Addressing the crowd on behalf of the governor, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal thanked the supporters for their show of solidarity, describing Makinde as “eminently qualified” to lead the country.
“Governor Makinde has significantly raised the standard of governance in Oyo State, and there is no doubt that he would bring his excellent performance to bear on national leadership. The governor will respond to your request at the appropriate time,” he said.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the rally, Lawal expressed surprise at the spontaneous turnout, noting that the crowd’s enthusiasm reflected genuine grassroots support.
“They came from all 33 local government areas to urge our governor to contest for the presidency. It’s a legitimate call, and their message will be delivered. At the appropriate time, the governor will respond to the call of the people,” he added.
