24 Arraigned Over Lynching, Burning Of Woman Accused Of Child Theft In Kaduna
The Kaduna State Police Command has arraigned 24 suspects before a magistrate court over the alleged lynching and burning of a woman accused of child theft in the Maraban Jos area of the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the command’s spokesperson, Mansir Hassan, said the suspects were arraigned at the Magistrate Court sitting at NDA Junction, Kaduna.
The incident occurred on Sunday when a woman was attacked by a mob following allegations that she had stolen a child.
According to Hassan, the police received a distress call and swiftly responded to the scene.
He said the divisional police officer (DPO) led officers to rescue the woman and took her into protective custody at the police station while investigations commenced.
However, the mob reportedly stormed the station, overpowered officers on duty, forcefully removed the woman from custody, and lynched her before setting her body ablaze.
Hassan disclosed that the 24 suspects are facing charges bordering on criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, mischief, destruction of public and police property, and culpable homicide.
He added that the matter was mentioned in court and adjourned until July 21 for further hearing, while the suspects were remanded in a correctional facility pending the determination of the case.
Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Government has welcomed the arraignment, describing it as a significant step towards ensuring justice and upholding the rule of law.
Ahmed Maiyaki, the state Commissioner for Information, commended the police command for what he described as its prompt action in prosecuting those allegedly involved in the killing.
Maiyaki reiterated that the administration of Governor Uba Sani would not tolerate mob action or jungle justice, urging residents to report suspected criminal activities to security agencies rather than taking the law into their own hands.
He warned that anyone found engaging in acts of vigilantism would face the full weight of the law, regardless of status or affiliation.
