281 Street Urchins Arrested In Lagos
The Lagos State Government has arrested 281 street urchins, known locally as Omotaku, in a week-long operation aimed at restoring safety and order across the state.
In a statement on X on Saturday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the suspects “have since been arraigned in court.”
He said the taskforce carried out operations in areas including Lekki Phase 1, Ikoyi, Lekki–Ajah Expressway, Bourdillon, Animashahun Busstop, Akowonjo Road, Egbeda, Fadeyi Busstop, Costain, Funsho Williams Avenue, Victoria Island, Apongbon, Jibowu, Yaba Phase 1, Lagos Island Palmgrove, Ojuelegba Road, Surulere, and other adjoining roads on both the Island and Mainland.
Wahab explained that the exercise is intended to keep roads and public spaces clear, reduce risks to motorists and pedestrians, and maintain environmental sanity in the state.
Residents are urged to report any disturbances caused by Omotaku or other street urchins by calling 09137555111 or 09138555111 for prompt response.
The operation is part of Lagos State’s intensified crackdown on street beggars and urchins in strategic locations to ensure law and order.
