35 Princes Jostle For Owa Obokun Stool
The race to succeed the late Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, has intensified as no fewer than 35 princes have declared their interest in the coveted throne.
The stool became vacant following the monarch’s demise on September 11, 2024, leaving the ancient Ijesa kingdom without a traditional ruler. Among the contenders are prominent figures from both within Ijesaland and the diaspora, signaling a fierce contest for the revered throne.
Sources within the Ijesa Traditional Council revealed that, as of the last count, 35 candidates had officially submitted their interest to occupy the stool.
“The interest in this stool has been overwhelming, with many notable individuals coming forward to signify their intention,” a source said.
Amid the growing tension and speculations of favoritism, the Ogboni of Ipole-Ijesa, Oba Omokehinde Oyeleye, who doubles as the Chairman of Atakumosa East Local Government Traditional Council, has assured all aspirants of a transparent selection process.
Speaking through his Personal Assistant, Mr. James Olusanya, Oba Oyeleye dismissed fears of bias, stating that the council remains committed to fairness and inclusivity.

The assurance from the traditional council follows reports of alleged clandestine installations of dukes (Lojas) by some factions within the Atakumosa East Traditional Council.
However, Oba Oyeleye reaffirmed his commitment to upholding traditional values while guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspiring princes.
He further encouraged interested candidates to continue presenting their applications, emphasizing the council’s readiness to accommodate all legitimate contenders.
The contest for the Owa Obokun throne is one of the most significant in Yoruba land, with the monarch traditionally regarded as a symbol of unity and cultural heritage for the Ijesa people.
As the selection process unfolds, all eyes remain on the Ijesa Traditional Council to deliver on its promise of a fair and transparent process, ensuring that the next Owa Obokun emerges in a manner befitting the kingdom’s rich history and customs.
