8 killed, Many Injured On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Accident
Eight persons have been confirmed dead in separate accidents on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the Benin-Sagamu expressway.
Twenty-two people were also injured in the accidents which occurred on Sunday.
Confirming the accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, Ahmed Umar, the sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun state, said the incident involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a tanker.
Umar said the accident occurred around 4:10pm, and was caused by excessive speeding by the bus driver, who lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the tanker from behind.
“A total of 16 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries (10 male adults and six female adults), while seven persons were recorded dead from the crash (six male adults and one female adult), and two others were unhurt,” he said.
“Two vehicles were involved with registration numbers AKD 693 XW, a Toyota Haice bus, and GZA 215 XA, a Mack tanker.”
Meanwhile, in the accident on the Sagamu-Benin expressway, one person was killed while six others sustained injuries
The accident involved Toyota Sienna and Toyota RAV4 vehicles, and the incident occurred near the Remo Majestic Hotel on the Sagamu-Benin expressway.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, the spokesperson of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps in Ogun state, who confirmed the incident, said it occurred around 9:20am.
He said the incident was linked to a burst tire of the Sienna vehicle marked EL 839 FST.
“It fell over the RAV 4 vehicle marked 6172 DLA, resulting in the death of one of the occupants of the Sienna vehicle, while six other passengers in both vehicles were injured,” Akinbiyi said.
