7 Essential Items Of Clothing Every Nigerian Man Must Have By Olatujoye Moroti
The biggest mistake one can make fashion wise is to forget you live in Nigeria and not take into consideration the weather, mode of transportation and possible scenarios that can happen on your way out before choosing what to wear. Before I go on though, I should say that this article is NOT for the man who has about 3 cars, with a driver and enough money to buy most of the things he wants. This article is for the brothers who wake up 4:30-5am to get to work early enough while running after buses and avoiding the cracks in the vehicle to ensure their clothes do not give way. This is for the Uncles who wish to manage their resources to get what is needed and not what they want.
So here are seven very essential pieces of clothing I think men should have before they go on to build their wardrobe.
Black Suit
If you are just going to get this please do not get a black coat, get a black SUIT (a true Nigerian should get the point). Black is great color that fits every other color perfectly which is the very first reason you should get one. So since you can’t afford to have various colors all at once, having a black would be great for your shirts and jeans. Another reason why a black suit is great is that it blends into both official and social events. So you can wear your suit to church, to work and still rock it on a date. Since you have just one, it is advisable to avoid buying one with a unique design, plain black would be great. You don’t want people seeing your suit and know it’s you before they see you because you wear it everywhere.
Black Pair Of Shoe
I don’t remember when I didn’t have a black pair of shoe even as a lady. Going to schools where black shoes were the ideal only makes me feel its almost impossible not to have a black pair of shoe. Black goes with every colour of shirt, native, trousers you might intend to wear. Now if you are smart you should know by now that you need a ‘good’ black shoe to make your come rain come shine kind of shoe.
Strong Sandal/ Slippers
Even before reading this article I believe you should have a pair of one of these. I am not referring to the ones that have Nike or Something written on them that are sold for 1,500, I’m talking about a real leather sandal or slippers. The ones you wear with natives when you do not feel like wearing your black shoe (incase that’s all you have), the one you wear to see a movie, to the beach, to the park and all sorts of informal gathering. Your palm can be black or brown depending on your preference as most colours blend well with both.
White Shirt
A white shirt is a must-have in every man’s wardrobe, and this has nothing to do with being in the church choir (lol gone are the days when they rocked white and black). White shirts are great for interviews and have been advised for important borard meeting by fashion experts. Not only does it make you look confident and established a strong presence, it also gives the skin a special glow (especially the dark skinned men). For your black suit, this white shirt would be great for work. Your white shirt can pass for social functions also, as a lady I’d tell you nothing beats the sight of a man in white on a beach. So feel free to rock your white at all occasions and still look classy.
Joggers
Going to the causal said, there’s really nothing much to say as to why you need a pair of joggers than it’s the perfect piece of clothing to wear looking classy and yet very casual. A neat lovely pair of joggers says to people who see you in it; ‘hey, I’m classy, but I’m really in no mood to all formal, I’m sexy and I know it’.
Black Belt
If you have a black pair of shoe and a suit, it’s only logical you have a black belt. You wouldn’t want to have a brown belt on a black shoe right. That’s a terrible fashion blunder. As stated above, black is universal, black goes with everything, so rock away.
Jeans
If a guy doesn’t have a pair of jeans, something might be wrong. A jeans is great for almost every occasion, depending on how well you combine it. Strong to withstand bus struggle, market wahala and many other issues you might experience, this is a must have for every guy. And hey blue jeans are perfect.
