Osun Panel Summons Former CP, Area Commander, 2 Others

THE Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police Brutality, Extra-Judicial Killing, and other Related Matters in the State of Osun has summoned former Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Johnson Moronike and three other police officers over allegation of extortion.

Other police officers summoned by the panel are Mr. Joshua Atunise, Inspector Muyiwa and Mr. Omoyale, a Superintendent of Police.

Chairman of the Panel, retired Justice Akin Oladimeji issued the summons yesterday during the panel’s sitting in Osogbo.

Oladimeji stated that the panel has the power to invite anybody to appear before it.

He said: “The law provides for such power and anyone who is either indicted in a petition or in evidence led by witnesses, the panel will be interested in hearing the side of such person.”

The Chairman explained that there are some of the cases where the image of the police in particular has been badly damaged, saying that it was important for the officers to appear, so that the image of the Police will not be completely damaged.

Muyiwa and Omoyale were summoned for alleged extortion and violation of human rights against a petitioner, Chief Adanku Oyinlola, who is the head of Olobedu Community, Ota Efun, Osogbo.

Atunise and Omoronike were summoned for refusing to obey court order to implement the payment of N30million and releasing the corpse of Daniel Babatunde, a final year Mechanical Engineering student of Osun State College of Technology, Esa Oke, that was killed by the police.

Babatunde was said to have been killed by the police for allegedly being an armed robber.

Both cases were adjourned till February 18, 2021.
