The Black Queens of Ghana on Sunday defeated the Super Falcons of Nigeria by a lone goal. However, the victory was not enough as they have eventually eliminated from the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations qualifying.
Recall that Nigeria had earlier defeated Ghana by two goals to nil in the first leg of the encounter, leaving Ghana needing a three-goal margin win to overturn the deficit.
The AWCON defending champions have now booked a ticket to the second and final round of the qualifiers as they seek a flight to Morocco for the final tournament.
Barcelona attacker Asisat Oshoala, as expected, led the Nigerian side, which boasted the experienced duo of Osinachi Ohale and Onome Ebi.
The match was goalless at the break before Ghana recorded the first and only goal of the game through Adubea, who slotted home from close range after receiving a through-ball.
Ghana appeared to be in control until the 65th minute, when captain Boakye was sent off for a second bookable offense, having fouled Oshoala on a counter-break.
The Nigerians’ numerical advantage, however, lasted only for 10 minutes as Glory Ogbonna was also sent off in the 75th minute for a reckless challenge on Naomi Animah.
