THE Osun Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) has begun move to conduct the much talked about local government election in the state.

There had been controversies on the proposed local government election by Governor Adegboyega Oyetola’s administration which will come to an end on November 26, 2022.

Some members of the public and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in particular had questioned Oyetola’s sincerity and sudden plan to conduct the election after losing his second term bid in the July 16 governorship poll.

Oyetola had over a year ago said he could not conduct the local government election because of the ‘huge amount of money’ involved. He thereafter appointed caretaker committee in each of the local governments and local council development areas.

But the Governor, after the emergence of Sen. Ademola Adeleke, as the Governor-elect, concluded plan to conduct the local government election.

Political analysts are of the view that the proposed local government election could be a landmine for the new governor.

However, the Osun Independent Electoral Commission has indicated its readiness to conduct the local government election.

The commission is scheduled to hold a meeting with all registered political parties today, Friday, by 10:00am.

According to the Chairman of the commission, Otunba Segun Oladitan, the essence of the meeting is to rob minds together with the political parties in respect of the local government election.

Oladitan, in a statement issued yesterday, said he expected to have all the political parties adequately represented at the meeting.

The statement reads in part: “The essence of the meeting is to rob minds together with the political parties in respect of the forthcoming Local Government Election in the state.

“OSIEC, through the statement further reaffirms her commitment to conduct a Local Council Election that will be acceptable to all.”
