NGO Calls For Total Removal Of Sexuality Education In School Curriculum

A non-governmental organization, Pen Publishers, has called on government at all levels and the Ministry of Education to see to the total removal of sexuality education in school curriculum across the country.
The call is coming months after Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu ordered that sexuality education be expunged from basic education curriculum across Nigeria.
Chief Executive Officer of Pen Publishers, Mrs. Haleemat Alli-Bankole stated that Comprehensive Sexuality Education is a Sexuality Education curriculum developed by UNESCO and partners for worldwide use whose content and delivery endangers children.
Alli-Bankole spoke during a sensitisation programme on sex education for students across the State of Osun, in Osogbo, yesterday.
She explained that the event was targeted at increasing the awareness about the cons of comprehensive sexuality education in the school curriculum.
Mrs. Alli-Bankole said: “This awareness programme is targeted at increasing the awareness about the harm of comprehensive sexuality education in our school curriculum.
“The Pen Publishers’ wishes to create awareness on its dangers in order to protect our vulnerable children from continued exposure to it by removing it from the school curriculum as recently directed by the Minister of Education”.
In her remarks, the Legal Consultant to the Foundation on Africa Cultural Heritage, Mrs. Mary Ekemeize, stated that sexual education should not be a part of the curriculum for pupils in basic classes, noting that it exposes them to immorality at a tender age.
Ekemeize added that many of textbooks in the course teach the students on how to have sex which they are not ready for.
She said: “Many textbooks and subjects in our schools today now teach students on how to have sex, something they are not to be exposed to at that age.
“When you look at textbooks in junior secondary schools today, they are talking about abortion which is illegal in Nigeria. They are not presenting its dangers to the children, they are rather seeing it as something normal.
“The government should replace sex education with some other subjects that will be of good to students. They can teach them on how to regulate emotions when they are angry. The government should see to the total removal of the subject from our curriculum “.
