Hardship: Osun PLWDs Lament Lack Of Job Opportunities, Means Of Survival
Some of the Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) in Osun State have decried the excruciating effects of the current economic hardship being experienced in Nigeria.
Findings by OSUN DEFENDER revealed that life has been difficult for some of the PLWDs since the removal of fuel subsidy in the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s administration on May 29, 2023.
The fuel subsidy removal and devaluation of the naira have led to the skyrocketing prices of foodstuffs and essential commodities.
Speaking in a telephone interview with OSUN DEFENDER yesterday, the Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disability (JONAPWD), Stephen Idowu, highlighted some of the challenges being faced by members of the association which centered on their wellbeing.
According to Idowu, “One of the most significant consequences of Nigeria’s economic downturn is the limited access to healthcare and support services for special needs individuals.
“With strained resources and funding cuts, many facilities and programs catering to their needs have been severely affected. This lack of access exacerbates their existing challenges and hampers their ability to lead fulfilling lives.
“Education is a fundamental right for all individuals, yet many special needs students in Osun State are experiencing disparities in access and quality due to economic constraints. Limited funding for special education programs, inadequate infrastructure, and a shortage of trained educators further marginalize these students, hindering their academic and personal development.”
The Chairman also stressed that another core challenge faced by the special needs people is employment opportunities.
He said: “The economic downturn has also disproportionately impacted employment opportunities for special needs individuals in Osun State. With high unemployment rates and a shrinking job market, many find themselves facing additional barriers to securing meaningful employment.
“Discrimination, lack of accommodations, and limited vocational training programs further perpetuate their exclusion from the workforce.
“Beyond economic challenges, special needs individuals in Osun State continue to face social stigma and discrimination, which are exacerbated by the prevailing economic conditions.
“Limited awareness and understanding of their needs, coupled with widespread misconception result in exclusion and marginalisation in various aspects of society, including education, employment, and social interactions. “
Idowu however implored the Osun State government for more support to lessen the economic hardship for the PWDs.
