A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, on Friday ordered that a 35-year-old man, Monday Ikeagwu, be remanded in a correctional centre for allegedly threatening to kill his mother.

The police charged Ikeagwu with a threat to life and stealing N625,000 belonging to his mother, Jacinta.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Chinagorom Eze told the court that Ikeagwu committed the offence on February 7 at the Obodoma Ekka community in the Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi.

Eze said Ikeagwu threatened to kill his mother with a gun.

He said the accused also stole N625,000 in cash belonging to his mother.

He said Ikeagwu committed an offence punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 33, Vol. 1 Laws of the Ebonyi State of Nigeria 2009.

The Defence Counsel, Solomon Eguji, prayed to the court to grant his client bail.

Eze, however, objected to the bail application.

“If bail is granted, he may disappear. I pray to the court to discountenance the bail application, ” he advised.

The Magistrate, Lillian Ogodo, did not take Ikeagwu’s plea for want in jurisdiction.

Ogodo said the case file and all exhibits should be forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

She adjourned the matter to March 29.
