Fuel Scarcity: OAU Students Skip Classes, Lament Hike In Transportation Fares
- Students’ Union Threatens Protest
Students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, residing off-campus are grappling with the challenge of commuting to school amidst the lingering fuel scarcity, which has resulted in a hike in transportation fares.
OSUN DEFENDER observed that students were trekking from the OAU campus to their off-campus residences, due to difficulty in securing transportation. The situation, according to some students who spoke to the medium, has made moving to and fro the school a long journey.

It was also gathered that the fuel scarcity prompted some students to skip classes, having heard of what their colleagues, who are currently stranded on campus due to the transportation challenge.
While speaking with OSUN DEFENDER, one of the students of the university who lamented the situation, cited the unwillingness of bus operators at OAU to comply with the demands of the Students’ Union, during their deliberations.
In the meantime, the Students’ Union of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has threatened to hit the streets in protest, if the fuel crisis persists.
According to the Union’s President, Abass Akinremi, the situation is not different in Osun, particularly around the campus environs where bus drivers have increased fares.
“We, as students, can no longer endure the burden imposed by the government’s economic policies,” Ojo said.
