Palace Burnt, Two Dead As Chieftaincy Crisis Erupts Araromi-Owu

Two persons – a civilian and a security personnel have allegedly been killed as a tussle over the monarchy of Araromi-Owu, a town in the Ayedaade local government area of Osun State escalated into a crisis on Tuesday.

Sources in the community told Osun Defender that trouble started around 2:00 p.m. when some hoodlums invaded the town and started causing trouble.

The sources who noted that the situation had been developing since last week before it eventually snowballed into a full-blown crisis, said many people were also injured.

A video shared on socio media watched by the medium showed some buildings being burnt while some cars, including a Lexus jeep, were also damaged.

One of the sources, who does not want his name in print said the hoodlums also burnt the community palace.

 

It was also gathered that some hoodlums waylaid a batch of security operatives deployed to the community inflicting injuries on some personnel.

Confirming the incident, the Osun police command spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola said a mobile police force has been deployed to the town along with a special police unit to restore peace.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to Osun State Governor on Security, Barrister Samuel Ojo said only two casualties have been recorded not five as claimed by some sources.

He said the crisis would have been brutal if not for government intervention since some days ago.

โ€œWe have intervened into the situation since five days ago and managed that it does not become very brutal. Only two persons have been killed not five and presently, all the heads of security outfits in the state are already aware and working to restore law and order in the communityโ€, he added.

Meanwhile, the state government has sued for peace in Orile Owu and Araromi Owu communities.

The state Governor Ademola Adeleke, also approved and directed that security operatives should immediately be stationed in the areas and protect the communities by maintaining law and order.
