Why I Called My Son ‘Crown Prince’ – Ooni’s Wife Replies To Critics

Folashade Ashley Adegoke, one of the wives of the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has responded to criticisms surrounding her decision to call her newborn son the “crown prince.

The Ooni and Folashade recently announced the birth of their son, which was followed by the queen’s Instagram post referring to him as the crown prince.

The title sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many questioning why she called her child the crown prince when the monarch already has two sons: Tadenikawo, born to Naomi, the Ooni’s estranged wife, and Oreade, born to Tobi Phillips, another of the monarch’s wives.

Addressing the backlash in a follow-up Instagram post, Folashade explained that her child is a prince by blood on both maternal and paternal sides.

She emphasized that the boy’s lineage grants him royal status and that her use of the title reflects his heritage.

“My son is a prince from both sides of his parents,” she wrote. “A prince from the mother’s side of Ooni Adagba Royal Compound of Lafogido ruling house, and a prince from the father’s side of Ooni Agbedegbede Royal Compound of Giesi ruling house. Combined, he stands as part of the royal throne of Oduduwa.”

Folashade also took the opportunity to encourage mothers to speak positively about their children. “As a mother, call forth and speak life to your children; call them what you want for them and what you want them to be. Let your children know who they are in this world and what they were born and destined to be without prejudice.”

In the post, she praised her husband for his unwavering support throughout her pregnancy journey, which she described as sacred. “To my ever-loving, supportive husband who has stood by me every step of the way, I love you with every fibre of my being.”

Folashade also shared that her pregnancy had followed the loss of a twin pregnancy, making the arrival of their son even more special. She expressed her gratitude for the support from family and friends during this time.

Despite the online controversy, Folashade stood by her decision to refer to her son as a crown prince, urging others to embrace the power of words in shaping the future of their children.

She concluded by stating that no mother should apologize for speaking life into her children and envisioning greatness for them.

The queen married the Ooni on October 15, 2022, and is said to be the fourth wife of the monarch, joining other wives, including Mariam Anako, Elizabeth Akinmuda, Temitope Adesegun, and Ronke Ademiluyi.
