Edo Poll: Tinubu, Buhari Congratulate Okpebholo On Victory

President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari have congratulated Senator Monday Okpebholo on his victory in the just concluded Edo State governorship election.

Osun Defender reported that Okpebholo, the APC candidate, secured 291,667 votes to defeat Ighodalo of the PDP who got 247,274 votes and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party who came third with 22,761 votes.

President Tinubu praised the APC’s victory, saying it is “a testimony to the people’s support for the ruling party, its progressive ideals, its economic reengineering programme and its commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.”

Tinubu urged Senator Okpebholo “not to gloat over his victory but to see it as a challenging call to service.” He encouraged the governor-elect to demonstrate magnanimity by “reaching out to his political rivals and uniting the people of Edo State to ensure its development.”

Tinubu also advised those aggrieved by the election outcome to seek redress through legal channels, commending INEC and security agencies for their efforts. “INEC has once again demonstrated that it is committed to organising a free and fair election in our country,” he said.

Also, former President Buhari in his congratulatory message, described the win as a “prized, historic electoral victory” and expressed hope that “both leaders of the incoming administration and the party that lost would work together to strengthen democracy and maintain the trajectory of the state’s development.”

Buhari in a statement signed my his media aide, Garba Shehu, commended the security agencies for ensuring a peaceful election.

โ€œI commend law enforcement agencies for the efforts that they put in ensuring a peaceful election and the multitude of election officials who strive to improve their act with each election.

โ€œI pray that Nigeria, the continentโ€™s most populous country, will continue to achieve remarkable progress under democracy.”
