Violence erupted at Elizabeth Estate in Osogbo, Osun State as Police officers allegedly attack an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and some residents of the estate.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on Wednesday morning around 9:30am when uninformed police personnel attempted to apprehend a fraudster suspect within the estate but the NSCDC officer at the entrance gate denied them access because they were not in uniform and they also came in a private car.

It was further gathered that the police officers went back to mobilize other men in uniform and also came with a Police Van to forcefully gain entrance into the Estate by assaulting the said NSCDC Officer who was reportedly taken to the State’s CID and has been detained since then.

Findings revealed that some residents of the Estate were also allegedly attacked by the Police officers in which one of the residents sustained injuries on his head.

A resident of the Estate who craved annoynmity told Osun Defender that “The confrontation began at 0930 am when police personnel attempted to apprehend a suspect who was to later be a yahoo guy also known as internet fraudster within the estate which is located near the Governor’s office in Abere. Unfortunately, NSCDC officers and private security guard elements at the gate refused to cooperate with the police.

“As reported, police officers made an initial visit to the estate the preceding night to arrest a suspect, only to be instructed by the NSCDC and private security team manning the property to liaise with property management as per their standard procedures. Upon returning the following morning, the police exhibited reduced tolerance and proceeded to enter the premises forcefully to apprehend the suspect, resulting in a contentious situation with security personnel and subsequent turmoil and shootings.

“An overzealous police officer’s attempt to seize a citizen’s cellphone, which was recording the scene, encountered vigorous opposition from the increasingly hostile crowd, already frustrated with the police’s behavior at the incident site.

“The police however took advantage of their larger numerical strength to beat mercilessly, overpowered, disarmed also arrested and whisked away to their office one of the NSCDC officers.”

When speaking with Osun Defender on Friday, the Osun State Police spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola said the Police will release a report soon on the incident.
