Speed Darlington’s Lawyer Decries Unlawful Detention
The Nigerian Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) has held musician Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, in custody for over a week following a complaint filed by fellow artist Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, known as Burna Boy.
Darlington’s lawyer, Stan Alieke, has condemned the detention as unconstitutional, emphasizing that his client is entitled to bail.
In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Alieke criticized the police for detaining Darlington under questionable circumstances.
Today marks exactly one week since my client, Mr Darlington Achakpo, also known as Speed Darlington, was re-arrested and detained by the @nigeriapoliceforce.
“He has been in custody ever since. The police should not violate his constitutional rights while purportedly enforcing someone else’s rights. He is entitled to bail and should be granted the same.”

Osun Defender formerly reported that Darlington was initially arrested in Owerri, Imo State, before being transferred to Abuja, where he is currently detained.
His arrest reportedly stems from allegations of cyberstalking Burna Boy, based on a petition filed by the Afrobeat artist.
Reports indicate the police are pressuring Darlington to issue a public apology to Burna Boy, citing his celebrity status as justification.
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju, who visited Darlington in custody, dismissed the allegations as baseless and criticized Burna Boy for allegedly using the police to oppress a fellow musician.
