Many Nigerian graduates are not employable due to a lack of skills and a mismatch between the skills graduates have and the skills the economy needs. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the unemployment rate for graduates in Nigeria was 5.3% in Q1 2024, up from 5.0% in Q3 2023. However, it is a tremendous blessing for the Nigerian society that a symbolic department; the Electrical and Electronics Department at the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree is breaking this jinx by equipping its students with innovative, creative, quality and problem-solving skills that is already ameliorating and igniting applaudable development, growth and indelible technological breakthrough in OSPOLY.

The train of difference had been birthed in the Elect-Elect Department decades ago, but 2024’s electrifying journey cannot be separated from February 14, 2024, when the Elect-Elect Department installed two sets of inverters ( 2.5Kva and 4Kva) with Six, 220Ah batteries of 12 capacity Voltage, 4000W Solar panels and Charge Controllers in its department. The solar energy has the capacity to supply power energy to the electrical and electronics department. It serves the purpose of supplying power for practical classes and reduces administrative costs.

To further enrich the department’s vision to enable its students to be employable, the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department of OSPOLY on July 22, 2024 commenced skill acquisition program to equip students of the department with practical skill, to standout among their pairs and to be financially stable.

Recently, another book of greatness was opened, when the Rector of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Mr. Kehinde Alabi, who has always eulogized lecturers and students of the Elect-Elect Department for their relentless, pacesetting and pragmatic approach to lecturing and teaching, on Thursday, December 5, 2024 commissioned a Five Million Naira worth 6KVA Solar Inverter system which were installed in the Management Information System (MIS) and the Registrar’s offices, for 24 hours uninterrupted power supply, by the 2023/2024 final year students of Electrical and Electronics Department of OSPOLY.

The proud Rector was again astonished during the opening of the Solar Inverter Project by the 2023/2024 final year students of the Electrical and Electronics Department.

He noted that “It is always a delight to see that the Elect-Elect Department is making us proud and placing us in an admirable position on the map of greatness, and among institutions making waves in practical and developmental skill in Nigeria, through its dynamic and pragmatic leadership, innovation, creativity and determination. I appreciate the lecturers of the department for their magnificent effort in guiding the students to achieve this remarkable feat. This is another breakthrough that is worthy of acknowledgement in our institution. Continue making us proud.”

An HND 2 student of the Elect-Elect department, Oseni Ige (Afobaje), who immensely contributed toward the success of the Solar Inverter project appreciated the HOD of the department, Engineer Omotayo Mayowa and all the lecturers in the department for their mutual cooperation with the final year students of the department, which facilitated the landmark achievement in the institution.

Oseni explained that “the Solar System which has the capacity to supply power energy to the Management Information System (MIS) and the Registrar’s offices for 24 hours uninterruptedly is being commissioned today, with the school Rector and some members of the management applauding us. The project would not have been successful because of the challenges we encountered during the project, but through determination, resilience, creativity and the ubiquitous guidance and support of our lecturers, our success story is born today.”

The Head of the Electrical and Electronics Department, Engineer Omotayo Mayowa during his speech at the opening ceremony appreciated the Rector of OSPOLY, Comrade Alabi for providing the department and the final year students with an enabling environment and opportunity to actualize their dream and showcase the knowledge and skills they have acquired.

Highlighting the significance of the project, Omotayo, said, “The significance of this project cannot be overemphasized. First, it serves as a learning arena for the students. It allows them to practice what they have been taught in the class, which buttresses one of our goals to make our students skillful and employable.” Adding that “During the process of assembling and installing of the Five Million Naira worth 6KVA Solar Inverter system which were installed in the Management Information System (MIS) and the Registrar’s offices, respectively, students acquainted themselves with the concept of teamwork, and exposing them to invaluable workshop experience.”

“The project also has administrative relevance- The MIS and the registrar’s offices are crucial departments in the institution, saddled with cumbersome responsibilities, which need adequate power supply to execute. We are certain that this project will enable these units to adequately and efficiently perform their responsibilities.”
