Outrage As NYSC CLO Assaults Two Female Corps Members
There is outrage at Enugu East Local Government Area following allegations that a Corps Liaison Officer (CLO) assaulted two female members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during a meeting held last Saturday.
The CLO, whose identity is yet to be disclosed, was accused of intimidating the corps members before boasting of his supposed “untouchable” status, citing his connections with senior NYSC officials.
This has sparked outrage from various quarters, including rights advocacy groups and concerned individuals, who have called for swift action.

According to reports, the matter came to light after a relative of one of the victims took to social media to narrate the ordeal. The user, posting via the handle @JoiceofLagos on X (formerly Twitter), alleged that the police, who initially took up the matter, were pressured into dropping the case after receiving instructions from higher authorities.
Reacting to the incident, the African Women in Public Service (AWiPS) issued a strong-worded statement on Monday, condemning the actions of the CLO and calling for immediate justice.
The statement, signed by its President, Ugo Agwu-Nnachi, described the incident as a gross abuse of power and an affront to the rights and dignity of the victims.

“We are deeply disturbed by reports of an alleged assault by a CLO in Enugu State. The claims of abuse of power and a subsequent cover-up are serious violations that require urgent redress. The NYSC must conduct a transparent investigation and ensure justice is served,” the statement read.
The AWiPS also expressed concerns over reports that law enforcement had been compromised, leaving the victims vulnerable to further threats.
The group vowed to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the need for systemic reforms within the NYSC program to prevent future occurrences.
Sources within the NYSC community have expressed shock over the incident, with some describing the CLO’s alleged actions as a betrayal of trust.
“The CLO is supposed to be a bridge between corps members and the NYSC, not a source of intimidation or harm,” one source lamented.
Meanwhile, members of the public have taken to social media to demand accountability, with many questioning the integrity of the NYSC’s internal processes. “If this can happen under the watch of NYSC officials, what does it say about the safety of corps members across the country?” one user wrote.
Calls for justice have continued to mount, with many urging the NYSC to address the situation transparently and restore confidence in the institution. As at press time, neither the CLO nor the NYSC authorities had officially commented on the incident.
