Harsh Economy: Stampede Death Toll Rises As IGP Issues Warning To Event Organisers
The death toll from stampede incidents across Nigeria continues to rise, prompting the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun to issue a stern warning to event organizers and palliative distributors.
These tragedies, which have claimed dozens of lives in recent days, highlight the dangers of unorganized public events, particularly during the festive season.
Osun Defender reports that in Ibadan, Oyo State, a children’s funfair turned deadly on December 18, 2024, when a stampede broke out, resulting in the deaths of no fewer than 35 children. Many others sustained critical injuries, leaving families in grief and the community in shock.
Just days later, on December 21, 2024, another stampede occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, during the distribution of food items to vulnerable groups. This incident claimed 10 lives and left several others injured.
A similar tragedy unfolded in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, during a palliative distribution organized by a philanthropist identified as Obi Jackson. Three people lost their lives in the incident, while numerous others were rushed to hospitals for urgent medical attention.

Reacting to the series of tragedies, the IGP in a statement on Saturday by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for Nigeria Police Force, Abuja, he decried the lack of organization and safety measures at public events.
He warned event organizers, individuals, and NGOs against neglecting security protocols, emphasizing that such negligence is not only reckless but also a criminal offense punishable under Nigerian law.
He cited Sections 196 of the Penal Code and 344 of the Criminal Code, which address actions that endanger public safety.
The police chief called on government officials, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders to collaborate in establishing a comprehensive framework for safe and efficient palliative distribution. He further advised Nigerians seeking aid to prioritize their safety and avoid crowding unregulated events.
Meanwhile, the IGP has directed state commissioners of police in affected areas to launch thorough investigations into the incidents to ensure accountability.
