Governor Aiyedatiwa Pardons 40 Convicts On 60th Birthday
Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has pardoned 40 convicts in commemoration of his 60th birthday, following recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
In a statement issued, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, explained that the decision includes the release of 15 convicts effective January 12, 2025.
Some death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment, while others had their jail terms reduced.
Dr. Ajulo stated, “The Council’s deliberations were enriched by insights from correctional authorities, legal experts, and esteemed community members, focusing on the nature of the offenses, duration of incarceration, age, health, and behaviour of the inmates.”

He further emphasized that “this compassionate gesture underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering commitment to extend Grace and Mercy undo the said convicts which representsde a vital component of his administration’s ongoing Justice Sector Reforms.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa signed the release orders on his birthday but chose not to hold celebrations in honour of the late Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi (Tuykana), who died recently.
The governor’s actions were carried out under Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
