Medical students of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, on Monday staged a protest at the office of the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Professor Jesse Otegbayo, over the prolonged power outage and lack of water supply in their hostels.

The students, who have endured over 100 days of darkness, decried the unbearable living conditions, stating that the situation was affecting their academic activities and overall well-being.

Armed with placards bearing inscriptions such as “+100 Days of Darkness: Save UCH; Save ABH Hall; Save Falade Hall; Give Us Light; This Is Not How We Want To Live; Medical School Is Hard Enough—Give Us Light”, the students demanded immediate intervention from the hospital management and relevant authorities.

They lamented that the epileptic power supply had persisted since October 2024, leaving them in difficult conditions with no access to electricity and a severe shortage of water.

As the protest raged, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and the CMD, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, were locked in a crucial meeting with stakeholders in the hospital’s conference room, deliberating on possible solutions to the crisis.

The students, however, insisted that enough was enough, stressing that medical school was already demanding without the added hardship of studying in darkness.

They called on the Federal Government and hospital authorities to swiftly restore power and water supply to the institution, warning that failure to act would only escalate their agitation.
