The Lagos State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, has unveiled the chairpersons for its standing committees amidst growing political uncertainty.

During Monday’s plenary session, Speaker Meranda announced the appointments, assigning key lawmakers to lead various committees.

Hon. Temitope Adewale was named Chairman of the Business and Rules Committee, while Hon. Richard Kasumu will oversee the Legislative Compliance Committee.

Others appointed include Hon. Setonji David (Ethics, Protocol and Privileges Committee), Hon. Surajudeen Tijani (House Services Committee), and Hon. Stephen Ogundipe (Information, Strategy and Security Committee).

The announcement comes at a time when political intrigues within the Assembly have intensified, with reports indicating that loyalists of the embattled former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, are plotting to remove Meranda from office.

Inside sources revealed that despite several failed attempts to unseat Meranda since her emergence as Speaker on 13th January 2025, fresh permutations are underway to reinstate Obasa.

According to sources within the Assembly, the latest strategy involves electing a lawmaker from Lagos West, preferably from Ikeja, after a candidate from Ifako-Ijaiye declined the offer.

Those who have pledged allegiance to Meranda are reportedly being pressured to reconsider their stance.

It is alleged that some APC leaders sympathetic to Obasa are orchestrating plans to install a proxy Speaker from the Ikeja constituency.

The plan, according to insiders, is for the new Speaker to step aside after a few weeks, paving the way for Obasa’s return. He is then expected to resign in favour of a preferred candidate, ensuring control remains within a selected political circle.
