30 Internet Fraudsters Jailed In Oyo

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibadan Zonal Directorate, has secured the conviction of 30 internet fraudsters before Justices Ladiran Akintola, Adebisi Adetujoye, and K.B. Olawoyin of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan.

EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the convictions in a statement on Thursday.

The convicts include Gbadega Ayomide, Ojo Oluwatomiwa, John Ade, Ezekiel Damilare, Usman Hammed, Ogunjobi Oluwadunsin, Abdulrauf Adekunmi, Ariyo Iyanu, Ahmed Tajudeen, Ayomide Adedara, Oyewale Kayode, Charles Nneji, Obaoye Isaac, Olisemeka Anakweze, Ojo Makanjuola, Taiwo Goodness, and several others.

They were charged with impersonation, obtaining by false pretence, retention of proceeds of crime, and possession of fraudulent documents.

One of the charges read, “That you, Siyanbola Ibrahim, ‘m,’ in June 2022 in Ibadan, with intent to defraud one Austin Frazier via Facebook Messenger, falsely represented yourself as Vivian Harding, a female from Chicago, United States of America, which you knew to be false, thereby committing the offence of personation, contrary to Section 484 of the Criminal Code Law Cap 30, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.”

All defendants pleaded guilty, prompting EFCC prosecutors to request their conviction.

Justice Akintola sentenced Oluwatosin to one-year imprisonment or a ₦150,000 fine; Oluwaseyi to six months or a ₦100,000 fine; and Raphael to three months or a ₦50,000 fine.

Other sentences included six months of community service or ₦100,000 fines for several convicts, three months of community service or ₦30,000 fines for others, and imprisonment terms ranging from one month to one year with varying fine options.

Additionally, all convicts forfeited money, phones, and a Lexus 350 car recovered from them to the federal government. Anakweze was ordered to refund ₦8,731,000 to his victim.
