Amnesty International Demands Probe into Natasha’s Allegations Against Akpabio

Amnesty International has called for an independent investigation into Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The human rights organisation made the demand in response to the controversy surrounding the Senate.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had accused Akpabio of denying Akpoti-Uduaghan her right to represent her constituents after she rejected his alleged sexual advances.

The senator claimed Akpabio had deliberately prevented her from contributing to debates and raising issues affecting her people.

Despite growing calls for an investigation, Akpabio has continued his duties, while Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for six months over alleged “unruly conduct.”

In a statement signed by its Nigeria Director, Isa Sanusi, Amnesty International urged authorities to take immediate action.

“Amnesty International calls on the Nigerian authorities to immediately institute an independent and impartial investigation into the allegations of sexual harassment by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio,” the statement read.

It emphasised that ignoring the allegations would discourage victims from seeking justice and embolden perpetrators.

“The National Assembly must not continue to look away while these allegations are trivialised and ignored. A failure to investigate will only reinforce a system where sexual harassment victims struggle for justice, while offenders walk free,” it added.

The group further warned that the growing culture of silence and fear of victim-blaming must be addressed to combat sexual harassment against women and girls.
