Nigerian Leaders, Lawmakers, Judges Tarnish Nation’s Image Like Yahoo Boys – Jonathan
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has likened the actions of Nigeria’s executive, legislature, and judiciary to internet fraudsters, saying their decisions negatively impact the country’s global reputation.
Speaking at the Haske Satumari Foundation’s annual colloquium in Abuja on Saturday, Jonathan stressed that the conduct of government officials contributes to the devaluation of Nigeria’s passport and the treatment citizens receive abroad.
“Why is it that our passport is not valued? Why are Nigerians not given the kind of treatment we deserve at international airports?” Jonathan asked.
“Sometimes, we think it’s because of Yahoo Boys or 419. Yes, they are part of the problem, but decisions by the executive, parliament, and judiciary also affect everyone.”
He further warned that no serious investor would put money into a country where the judiciary is compromised.
“No businessman will invest where government functionaries dictate to judges what judgments to give. It’s a big risk,” Jonathan said.
His remarks come amid growing concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s past, including allegations of drug involvement and certificate fraud, as well as sexual harassment claims against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Kogi lawmaker Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
