Osun NUJ Condemns Accusation Against TVC Correspondent
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, has condemned the accusation against TVC correspondent Rafiu Hammed over his report on the closure of primary health centres in the state.
In a statement signed by the Chairman, Comrade Wasiu Ajadosu, and Secretary, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, the union described the accusation by the Special Adviser on Public Health, Dr. Akindele Adekunle, as an attempt to gag the press.
The NUJ clarified that Hammed was simply carrying out his professional duties by reporting a news conference, not producing a special report.
It stressed that journalists have the right to cover press briefings from any group and that government officials should hold their own press conferences to refute claims rather than targeting reporters.
Citing Section 22 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the union reaffirmed the media’s role in holding government accountable.
It warned that journalists in Osun State would not succumb to intimidation from public officials while discharging their duties.
The NUJ urged politicians to recognise the media as a pillar of democracy and development rather than treating it as an adversary.
