Trump Hikes Tariff On Chinese Imports To 125% Over Retaliatory Measures
The United States has raised tariffs on Chinese imports from 104% to 125% in what appears to be a new height in the ongoing trade war between both countries.
Former President Donald Trump made this known in a statement via X (formerly Twitter), following Beijing’s imposition of additional retaliatory tariffs on American goods.
He accused China of exploiting global trade systems and “ripping off” the U.S. and other countries.
“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately,” Trump said.
He insisted that the Asian power must come to terms with the fact that “ripping off the U.S.A., and other countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable.”
Trump, however, announced a 90-day suspension of the “reciprocal tariff” for other countries, reverting to a flat 10% rate.
“I have authorised a 90-day pause and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately,” he added.
The decision, he said, followed appeals from more than 75 countries urging U.S. agencies, including the Departments of Commerce and Treasury, to seek peaceful resolutions on trade-related issues such as tariffs, currency manipulation, and trade barriers.
