Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has ordered the state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abba, to clamp down on alleged illegal tax collection and forgery of council documents by some court-sacked Yes/No local government chairmen.

In a directive issued on Sunday, the Governor described the actions of the former council bosses as a threat to law and order at the grassroots.

A statement signed by the Spokesperson to the Governor, Mallam Olawale Rasheed said Adeleke called on the police to immediately invite them over allegations of falsifying official documents, creating dubious revenue taskforces, and extorting market operators using forged papers.

He particularly cited Boripe Local Government as a hotspot for these illegal activities.

Rasheed noted that according to reports reaching the government, a sacked chairman in the area allegedly set up an unauthorised revenue taskforce that printed fake documents for internally generated revenue (IGR), including local government ID letters and market receipts.

“These illegal officials have been issuing forged documents to members of the public,” the Governor said, warning that such actions amount to a breach of the law and a disregard for the ongoing court process regarding their sack.

The Governor also directed his Special Adviser on Security to work with the police for swift implementation of the order.

He expressed concern over the hardship such illegal collections have imposed on residents, describing it as a deliberate attempt to exploit the people.

“Is this the reason for illegal occupation of local government secretariats? Is this all about extorting the people and imposing pains and suffering on them? This should stop forthwith,” Adeleke said.

He added that forging council documents and collecting revenue without authorisation are criminal acts that will be punished under the law.

“Any person caught in such act will face the full wrath of the law,” he warned.
