The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new turn on Monday as the party’s Governors’ Forum distanced itself from the camp loyal to former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, by recommending a new National Secretary in place of his embattled ally.

At the end of its fourth meeting for the year 2025, held in Ibadan, Oyo State, the PDP Governors’ Forum declared that the Deputy National Secretary should immediately assume the role of Acting National Secretary, pending the nomination and ratification of a substantive officer from the South East Zone at the party’s next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

OSUN DEFENDER gathered that the decision marks a formal end to the lingering tussle over the Secretary position, which had pitted pro-Wike elements against other power blocs within the party.

Wike’s loyalist, who has held on to the post amid mounting opposition, has now been effectively shown the exit door.

The development came in the wake of the Supreme Court’s judgment, which party insiders believe has opened the way for the party to reassert internal control and restore constitutional order to its leadership structure.

In a communiqué signed by Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, who also serves as Chairman of the Forum, the PDP Governors reiterated their resolve to shield the party from external infiltration and unholy alliances, while welcoming genuine joiners who align with its ideology.

“The Forum reiterates its position taken in Asaba on the issue of the National Secretary,” the statement read, adding that the decision to replace the Wike-backed Secretary was in line with party discipline and internal cohesion.

The Forum also condemned the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, throwing its weight behind embattled Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

“We restate our solidarity with His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara… and reiterate our commitment to stand with him till the end,” the governors declared.

Beyond party matters, the Forum raised the alarm over worsening insecurity across the nation, pointing to fresh attacks in Plateau, Borno, Katsina, and Edo States.

It called for a bottom-up security strategy that empowers subnational units to build effective community defence mechanisms.

Meanwhile, the PDP governors resolved to hold the party’s National Convention from August 28 to 30, 2025, in Kano.

They also announced the constitution of the Zoning and Convention Committees, with Bayelsa Governor, Douye Diri, and Adamawa Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, chairing the two bodies respectively.

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, was named Vice Chairman of the Convention Committee.

In a show of party unity, all serving PDP governors and deputy governors were in attendance, including host Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.
