A four-storey building has collapsed in Lagos, with occupants trapped, and some feared dead.

OSUN DEFENDER reports that the incident occurred on Saturday morning at Oremeta Street, Ojodu, Lagos where an uncompleted storey building housing Equal Rights Restaurant caved in.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, with rescue operations underway to save those trapped under the rubble.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact number of casualties, but the scene remains chaotic as emergency responders work tirelessly.

Preliminary reports suggest the building was under construction, raising concerns about structural integrity and adherence to safety regulations.

Eyewitnesses described a sudden collapse, with debris engulfing workers and passersby.

The Lagos State Government has vowed to investigate the cause, amid growing scrutiny over frequent building collapses in the state. In 2024 alone, Lagos recorded 19 such incidents, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.

LASEMA, alongside the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has deployed heavy-duty equipment to aid rescue efforts. Local hospitals are on standby to treat survivors, while community members gather, praying for those still trapped.

The incident echoes a January 2025 collapse in Ikota, where two died and five were injured, underscoring the persistent challenge of unregulated construction in Lagos.

The public awaits further updates on the rescue operation and the final toll of the devastating collapse.
