Vatican Sets Saturday For Pope Francis’ Funeral
The Vatican has announced that the funeral of Pope Francis will be held on Saturday at 10:00 am (0800 GMT) at St Peter’s Square in Vatican City.
According to the statement released on Tuesday, the body of the late Argentine pontiff will be moved from St Peter’s Basilica to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome for burial after the ceremony.
Pope Francis died on Easter Monday at the age of 88 in his residence at the Casa Santa Marta within Vatican City.
His death was officially confirmed by the Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who said the Pope passed at exactly 7:35 am.
Tributes have continued to pour in from around the world, with religious leaders, global figures, and institutions paying homage to the late pontiff’s humility, reforms, and deep connection with the people.
Francis was widely admired for his efforts to modernise the Catholic Church, promote inclusiveness, and defend the environment.
He was the first Latin American pope and the first Jesuit to assume the papacy, serving since 2013 until his passing.
