There has been an outcry in Osun State as the immediate past Speaker of the Osun House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye, stirred controversy on Monday by referring to Governor Ademola Adeleke as a “caretaker governor.”
Owoeye, while speaking during a Yoruba political programme, Oro Oselu, aired on a private radio station, fired verbal salvos at the Adeleke-led administration, accusing it of wastefulness and poor governance.
“Let us set political rivalry aside and speak plainly: the Oyetola administration remains one of the most prudent and impactful in Osun State’s history. It stands in stark contrast to the extravagant and wasteful tendencies of the current Adeleke-led administration,” Owoeye declared.
He further asserted, “Since the creation of Osun State, no period has felt more squandered than now. Since assuming office, this caretaker governor administration has spent billions of naira with questionable results. It is fair to say that this government has become a symbol of waste and misplaced priorities.”

In a statement by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the governor described Owoeye’s remarks as “reprehensible and condemnable,” noting that the former Speaker “may have become politically confused.”
Rasheed said: “The statement credited to former House Speaker, Timothy Owoeye, is illogical and deeply insulting. A duly elected governor, affirmed by the Supreme Court, cannot be addressed as a caretaker. Mr Owoeye must retract the statement and offer a public apology.”
“It appears Mr Owoeye is troubled by the dualisation of the Palace to Brewery junction road now nearing completion—an achievement for which Ijesha people are praying for the Governor daily.
“Or perhaps he is pained that the University of Ilesa is now a functional reality, unlike the audio promises under his leadership. He may also be reeling from the failure of a high-profile defector to trigger the mass defections he dreamt of.”
The statement added that Owoeye had once visited the Governor in the early days of the administration to seek file approvals and payments. “How can a governor who approved your files be labelled caretaker?” Rasheed queried.

In a swift reaction, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Good Governance (CCSOGG) condemned Owoeye’s remarks, branding them “treasonable, reckless, and inflammatory.”
In a press release signed by its Secretary-General, Comrade Olalekan Johnson, the group warned that the former Speaker’s utterances “pose a threat to democratic stability” and risk inciting public disaffection.
“The Adeleke administration has brought radical progress across Osun, including in Mr Owoeye’s hometown, which suffered neglect under previous leadership,” the statement noted.
CCSOGG called on security agencies to immediately summon the former Speaker for questioning, stressing that “treasonable utterances must not be tolerated in our democratic space.”
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to defending democratic values and declared its unflinching support for Governor Adeleke’s administration, urging political leaders to exercise decorum and responsibility in their public comments.
