The Federal Executive Council has approved the renewal of the Group Life Assurance Scheme for the 2025/2026 year, covering the President, Vice President, ministers, civil servants, and personnel of Treasury-funded MDAs.

Announcing this after Monday’s council meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, said the scheme ensures financial support for the families of deceased federal public servants.

She said, “The Federal Government has taken out a life policy on each public servant. In the unfortunate event of death, the next of kin will receive benefits to cushion the loss. This underscores the importance that President Bola Tinubu’s administration places on the welfare of federal workers.”

The policy also covers paramilitary and uniformed agencies such as the Immigration Service, Civil Defence Corps, Correctional Service, Federal Fire Service, Road Safety Corps, NDLEA, and the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Seventeen insurance underwriters have been appointed to manage the policy, which is renewable annually and becomes active upon premium payment, in line with the FG’s “no premium, no cover” policy.

Walson-Jack added that many public servants are unaware of the policy’s existence and that her office will embark on a nationwide sensitisation campaign.

“No family of a deceased public servant should be left without support,” she said.

Also speaking at the briefing, Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, revealed a new initiative to monetise Nigeria’s cultural and tourism assets in partnership with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated.

She said the project aims to contribute $100 billion to the economy by 2030, create two million jobs by 2027, and promote national heritage through responsible monetisation of both tangible and intangible cultural assets.

Musawa explained, “This is about using what we already have to create wealth, identity, and pride. Our cultural capital is immense, and now we are putting in place the framework to monetise it responsibly.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Labour and Employment, Maigari Dingyadi, announced the approval of a revised National Policy on Employment, which had not been updated in over six years.

He said the new framework is designed to reflect the evolving labour market, encourage productive employment, reduce poverty, and stimulate entrepreneurship.

It will also be presented at the upcoming International Labour Organisation conference in Geneva.
