A female food vendor in Haiti has reportedly poisoned 40 gang members to avenge the killing of her family members.

Local media in the Caribbean nation reported that the unnamed woman, a respected vendor in the Kenscoff district of the capital, laced a special delicacy with a deadly substance before serving it to members of a notorious criminal gang.

The gang, identified as ‘Viv Ansanm’, is believed to be affiliated with the feared gang leader and ex-policeman, Jimmy Cherizier, popularly known as ‘Barbecue’.

According to reports, the woman had long operated a food stall and was well known for her signature dish. Posing as an appreciative resident grateful for the gang’s so-called “protection”, she offered free servings of the meal to several members of the group.

However, unknown to the gangsters, the food had been spiked with a powerful industrial insecticide. Within minutes of consumption, the victims began experiencing severe stomach pain, vomiting, and eventually collapsed. All 40 individuals reportedly died before emergency help could arrive.

Sources said the woman lost multiple members of her family to the gang’s violent activities. While most residents of the gang-ridden neighbourhood have remained silent out of fear, the vendor is believed to have meticulously planned her act of vengeance over a period of time.

Shortly after the incident, she fled her home in Kenscoff — a move that proved crucial, as the gang retaliated by burning down her house in anger. Despite the backlash, she later turned herself in to the police and confessed to the killings, stating that she acted alone and was driven by the pain of losing her loved ones.

The Haitian authorities have yet to release a statement on whether she will face charges.

Public reaction, however, has been mixed, with some hailing her as a symbol of courage in the face of terror, while others have warned against glorifying vigilante justice.

Haiti has been plagued by gang violence in recent years, with armed groups controlling large swathes of Port-au-Prince and routinely engaging in kidnappings, extortion, and killings. Ordinary citizens have been caught in the crossfire, and government forces have struggled to rein in the chaos.
