NAPS Slams WAEC Over Overnight Exam Conducted Under Torchlight n Asaba

The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has strongly criticised the conduct of a WAEC examination held overnight at Unity Modern School, Asaba, Delta State, describing the incident as a “national disgrace” and a “betrayal of the promise we owe our youth.”

NAPS President, Comrade Eshiofune Paul Oghayan, condemned the development, saying, “What should have been a moment of academic dignity was turned into a nightmare. Like planting seeds in the dead of night and expecting them to flourish, the system has once again demanded excellence from students while depriving them of the environment to succeed. This is not just a failure. It is sabotage.”

The exam, which took place on the evening of May 22, 2025, reportedly began at 6:00 p.m. and stretched deep into the night, with students relying on torchlights to write.

NAPS has demanded an immediate public explanation from the Head of WAEC Nigeria, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, and called on the Federal Ministry of Education to investigate the circumstances that led to such a breakdown.

“The eyes of the world are on Nigeria. What shall they see? A nation that protects its future or one that sabotages it? Let it be known. Students are not candles to be burned in the dark. They are stars meant to shine,” Oghayan declared.

He warned that if any student fails the affected paper due to the “abnormal and inhumane conditions,” NAPS would not hesitate to mobilise a nationwide protest.

The association also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and ensure that institutional failure does not undermine his efforts to reform Nigeria’s education sector.
