DPO Killed As Youths Attack Kano Police Station Over Detainee’s Death
Palpable fear has gripped residents of Rano Local Government Area of Kano State following a violent incident that led to the death of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and one other individual.
The state police command, in a press release on Monday, said the crisis began on Sunday evening when a motorcycle mechanic identified as Abdullahi Musa was arrested for alleged reckless and dangerous riding. He was believed to be under the influence of intoxicants at the time of his arrest.
The police stated that Musa developed health complications while in custody and was rushed to Rano General Hospital.
The Police Public Relations Officer for the Kano Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said, “He unfortunately passed away on 26th May 2025, at about 06:00 am, while receiving treatment.”
Following news of his death, a group of angry youths reportedly stormed the Rano Police Division, setting parts of the station ablaze and destroying several vehicles.
“The attackers looted and torched sections of the station, burnt two vehicles, destroyed ten others, and seriously injured the DPO,” Kiyawa added.
The DPO, whose name was not disclosed in the statement, was immediately rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that day.
In the aftermath of the violence, police confirmed the arrest of 27 suspects allegedly involved in the attack. Authorities said the situation has now been brought under control.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, has ordered a “comprehensive and transparent investigation” into the incident.
He also paid a condolence visit to the Emir of Rano, His Highness, Mohammed Isah Umar.
