Elon Musk Denies New York Times Report Alleging Heavy Drug Use

Tech billionaire and former Trump administration official Elon Musk has denied a report by The New York Times alleging he heavily used ketamine, ecstasy, and psychedelic mushrooms during the 2024 U.S. election campaign.

According to the report published Friday, Musk—who served as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under former President Donald Trump—consumed such large doses of ketamine that he developed bladder issues.

The report also claimed he travelled with a pill box and engaged in recreational drug use, including ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms.

It remains unclear if Musk allegedly used the substances while still holding his federal position, during which he oversaw widespread layoffs in the U.S. civil service.

Reacting via his social media platform X, Musk wrote, “Also, to be clear, I am NOT taking drugs! The New York Times was lying their ass off.”

He acknowledged previously trying prescription ketamine, stating, “I tried prescription ketamine a few years ago and said so on 𝕏, so this not even news.

It helps for getting out of dark mental holes, but haven’t taken it since then.”

Musk’s denial came shortly after a rare Oval Office farewell meeting with Trump on Friday, during which he appeared with a black eye as he officially stepped down from his DOGE role.

He explained that the injury came from a playful punch by his young son, known publicly as “X.”

The Times also cited concerns about Musk’s erratic behaviour, referencing an earlier incident in which he was seen giving what was described as an enthusiastic Nazi-style salute.

When asked if he was aware of Musk’s alleged drug use, former President Trump said, “I wasn’t. I think Elon is a fantastic guy.”
